Case Study: Redesigning the Arkham Horror Playmat for a Better Player Experience

Introduction

As a designer focused on creating high-quality playmats that enhance gameplay, I pay close attention to player feedback. The original Arkham Horror playmat received praise for its vibrant artwork, durable materials, and immersive design, but a recurring concern emerged—card placement. One customer pointed out that the playmat didn’t provide an area for their hand, making their usual setup feel restrictive.

This feedback prompted me to redesign the playmat’s layout, removing unnecessary zones and creating a more adaptable playing space. At the same time, I made another significant change—replacing AI-generated artwork with commissioned pieces from talented artists. This shift not only improves the unique personality and authenticity of the design but also allows me to support creatives who bring fresh artistic perspectives to tabletop accessories.

The updated playmat prioritizes flexibility, ergonomic usability, and personalization, ensuring players get a visually stunning and highly functional gaming surface.

Identifying the Problem

The customer’s review highlighted what worked and what didn’t:

  • Strong Visual Appeal: The playmat’s high-resolution artwork and bold colors enriched the thematic experience.

  • Premium Quality & Durability: The polyester blend surface ensures a smooth, long-lasting gaming experience.

  • Layout Limitations: The card zones didn’t match the player’s preferred setup, especially the lack of space for holding their hand.

  • Potential for Repeat Purchases: If the layout improved, the customer would buy again, signaling a demand for better usability.

Similar concerns had surfaced in other feedback, reinforcing the need for a more flexible design that works across different playstyles.

The Redesign: Prioritizing Player Comfort & Flexibility

To solve the layout issue while maintaining the playmat’s immersive feel, I implemented several key changes:

1. Removing Predefined Draw/Discard Zones

The original playmat included designated spaces for draw and discard piles. While useful for some, these fixed zones restricted placement options for players with varying preferences.

Instead, I removed these designated areas, opening up more space so players could position their decks and discard piles however they wanted. This provides a customizable, player-driven setup without forcing a structured layout.

2. Creating Open Space for Hand Management

One of the biggest concerns was the lack of space for holding cards. Many players, especially those immersed in strategic decision-making, prefer keeping their hand visible on the table when planning their moves. The original playmat didn’t accommodate this, leading to frustration.

The new design creates space on both sides of the playmat, making it easy for players to place their hand down naturally when not actively playing. This simple but effective adjustment improves comfort, visibility, and accessibility, allowing players to keep their cards within reach while focusing on the game.

3. Optimizing for Left- & Right-Handed Play

Another critical consideration was hand dominance—some players prefer placing their cards to the left, while others position them to the right.

The redesigned playmat eliminates restrictive zones and provides neutral open space, ensuring left- and right-handed players can set up comfortably. This flexibility enhances accessibility while making the playmat more inviting for a wider audience.

4. Streamlining the Layout for a Cleaner Gaming Experience

Rather than cluttering the design with excess labels and zones, this redesign embraces a minimalist yet highly functional approach. The new playmat allows users to set up their game intuitively and efficiently by focusing on player choice and adaptability.

5. Elevating the Artwork with Commissioned Illustrations

While the original playmat featured AI-generated art, I recognized the value of having unique, hand-crafted designs that tell a stronger story. The updated playmat now features commissioned artwork from professional artists, ensuring:

  • A more personalized and immersive thematic representation.

  • Authentic artistic expression that resonates with players.

  • Support for creative professionals who bring fresh visual ideas to tabletop accessories.

This shift reinforces my commitment to high-quality, artist-driven designs, making each playmat more distinct and tailored to the Arkham Horror universe.

Results & Player Impact

By removing rigid zones and introducing flexible card placement areas, this redesign solves a primary usability concern while maintaining the playmat’s polyester blend quality and immersive artwork. The improved layout:

  • Encourages a player-first experience, removing restrictive placements.

  • Enhances usability for different playstyles and dominant hand preferences.

  • Improves accessibility, allowing players to organize their cards naturally.

  • Boosts satisfaction and repeat purchases, making it more appealing for long-term use.

  • Strengthens artistic individuality, moving beyond AI-generated designs and embracing commissioned illustrations from professional artists.

Conclusion

I redesigned the Arkham Horror playmat by carefully assessing player feedback to prioritize flexibility, usability, and artistic authenticity. By removing unnecessary zones and adding space for hand management, this improved layout better accommodates player needs, making the experience more intuitive, immersive, and enjoyable.

This evolution in design underscores my commitment to creating game accessories that seamlessly blend aesthetics with function. I also support independent artists and bring fresh creative perspectives to tabletop gaming.
